“Cloris Leachman is a show business legend and bona-fide queen of comedy. I worship her,” says Peaches Christ, host of Midnight Mass and alter ego of filmmaker Joshua Grannell. “I really want to pull out all the stops for this giant salute and I’m nervous. You might say I’m experiencing, dare I say it, a bit of HIGH ANXIETY?”
Cloris Leachman is a multiple Emmy Award-winning actress and winner of an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (The Last Picture Show), who is best known for playing Phyllis Lindstrom on the 1970s TV series “Mary Tyler Moore,” and later on the spinoff series “Phyllis.” A consummate entertainer, Leachman has unleashed her talents in over 200 movies and television shows including the film noir classic Kiss Me Deadly, a suspenseful episode of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and even took over the reins for Charlotte Rae in the beloved 1980s sitcom, “Facts of Life.” A force to be reckoned with, Leachman is a fearless performer who has even tackled multiple Broadway productions including William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” with Katherine Hepburn, singing/touring with her one-woman cabaret show and kicking up her heels during the seventh season of the popular “Dancing with the Stars.” She is currently on the new, hit comedy sitcom “Raising Hope,” playing the colorfully wacky grandmother “Maw Maw” to the delight of many of her fans.
Ms. Leachman has left an indelible, comedic impression in three Mel Brooks film: as Frau Blücher in Young Frankenstein (1974) whose mention of her name causes horses to whinny and Madame Defarge in History of the World: Part 1 (1981) in segment that parodied “A Tale of Two Cities.”
SF Sketchfest and Peaches Christ are stoked to present a rare, 35 mm archival print screening of High Anxiety, a hilarious San Francisco-set send-up of Alfred Hitchcock and the suspense genre which features Leachman as the truly, twisted villainess Nurse Charlotte Diesel.
