THE SAN FRANCISCO ALBUM PROJECT: WHO ARE WE…?

THE SAN FRANCISCO ALBUM PROJECT: WHO ARE WE…?

=

Made up of performer and producer veterans from the legendary scenes, clubs and theatres of the last 20 years, The San Francisco Album Project is a drag-performance co-operative committed to bringing an inventive, theatrical and narrative aesthetic to the art of the lip-sync. Taking the format of the ‘classic album’ as the text to build off of, The San Francisco Album Project hopes to honor the source material as much as present to the audience a never before thought-of or imagined interpretation of what is already very charged and fundamental music. The troupe itself is mutable in size, made up of almost 20 members: faux queens, drag queens, directors, producers, set designers, graphic designers, DJs, video artists, and every combination therein.

Although the album titles are curated by Robert Barber and Nathan Rapport, the individual artists lay the foundations of their own performance. The narrative arc of the whole show is then devised, sculpted and directed by the group itself, under guidance from Michael Soldier.

ROBERT BARBER (Producer)

Bobby was raised in Las Vegas, the city that gave birth to The Liberace Museum (R.I.P.), drive-thru astrologers, and $.99 breakfasts. He moved to San Francisco in 1997 and soon immersed himself in the vibrant and thriving drag-performance scenes at Trannyshack and Midnight Mass.

Today he co-runs Peaches Christ Productions with Joshua Grannell (having also Executive Produced Grannell’s film All About Evil), and is still stage manager/gal-Friday to Heklina for all things Trannyshack. You can also find Bobby every 2nd Friday at TRUCK where, with Tom Kern and Arno Kazarian, he throws Rarebits, a monthly grub/tunes/video soiree. Aside from LPs and drag queens, Bobby loves cats, lyric poetry, and Fassbinder, in that order.

NATHAN RAPPORT (Producer/Performer)

aka Nikki Sixx Mile

Nathan Rapport hails from Detroit, Michigan, where he attended Wayne State University for painting and printmaking, but also focused his energies on musical endeavors: throwing and DJ-ing several underground queer dance parties.

In 2007, he moved to the city by the bay and found an immediate and unexpected home within San Francisco’s art drag community. He’s spent the last 6 years re-focusing on freelance visual art and regularly contributing to several drag institutions, including Trannyshack, Midnight Mass, and Some Thing with his drag persona, Nikki Sixx Mile.

MICHAEL SOLDIER (Producer/Performer)

aka Precious Moments

Michael Soldier is a versatile character actress with a varied and sordid stage and screen resume. Ecstatic to currently be back in Cockettes-mode after Hypnodrome premiere runs of Pearls Over Shanghai as Chang, and Hot Greeks as Lysistrata, he can also be found backstage giving makeup advice. More? Find him in performing/producing roles of this summer’s reunion tour of legendary tranny punk band PEPPERSPRAY, fundraisers and benefits, the Trannyshack stage (Miss Tshack 2001), and many adult websites that your parents should have blocked. Michael Soldier LMT has been a massage professional for 22 years.

PETER GRIGGS (Performer)

aka U-Phoria

What is U-Phoria? A State of Mind? Or an Idea of bliss? U-Phoria considers themself to be a performance activist who strives to bridge gaps in a fragmented community, utilizing many forms of stagecraft. This performance activist is also a proud member of the House of Glitter - a multiracial drag collective in San Francisco, and can be seen at local drag shows such as Trannyshack, Mascara, SOME THING, and The Monster Show. U-Phoria is totally excited about being a part of The San Francisco Album Project.

“The preservation and appreciation of particular musical masterworks cannot be denied and should not be forgotten in their completeness; and listened to at maximum volume.”

ELI FRANCIS (Performer)

aka Elijah Minnelli

Eli/Elijah hails from Detroit, MI where they earned a BFA in Theatre Performance & Studies from Wayne State University. Since moving to San Francisco a mere four years ago, they embraced thier inner drag queen and ungracefully blazed forward. Minnelli has thus-far spent their career as resident drag performer at the San Francisco night life parties SOME THING, Trannyshack and the late great Tiara Sensation, from where they hold the title of “WINNER” for Project Runtover Season 1.

Even though Minnelli thereafter lost every title they competed for, including Miss Trannyshack Star Search 2010 and The Tiara Sensation Pageant 2011, Minnelli still continues to create and blend thier own so-called high-art, live theatre and drag into an ever-changing form of media and self-expression.

“The work that I have created for this evening, evenings past, as well as all the other shit I come up with, is, and will always be, dedicated to San Francisco, which continues to embrace and inspire me.”

DIA DEAR (Performer)

Dia Dear’s performances are an ephemeral embodiment of the hyper-real IRL. Stylistically bridging a gap between the nightclub and traditional performance, Dia Dear’s work creates breaks from the ubiquitous consumption of technological integration. Through use of a highly stylized visual aesthetic, evocative lip-synch, precise movement, and a dedication to creating a moment of sincere vulnerability, Dia Dear’s work explores the essence of humanity in the ruins of a digital reality.

Dia Dear has performed extensively throughout San Francisco, and has been featured in Berlin at experimental performance salons, Miami Art Basel fringe parties, as well as New York and Los Angeles night clubs.

RAYA LIGHT (Performer)

Raya Light is a product of Los Angeles in the 1980s, the decade that gave birth to mini-malls, latchkey kids, crack cocaine and of course…new wave! Needless to say, her Yaz(oo) eight-tracks got plenty of wear and tear!

Of late, the former Miss Trannyshack (2007) has taken her drag skills out of the clubs and into the theater scene: trolling the corners downtown as villainess Crystal Miss in “The Tenderloin Christmas Hustler” (2008-2011), giving Lindsay Lohan a run for her money as the ultimate fame whore in “The Unbearable Lightness of Raya” (2009, 2011), screaming her side pony off in the Halloween/Facts of Life musical mash-up “HALLOWEEN! The Ballad of Michelle Myers” (2011-2012), and smacking bitches senseless as Madge the Magnificent in “Tinsel Tarts in a Hot Coma” (2013).

Now put the needle on the record and let the album play!

TRIXXIE CARR (Performer)

Trixxie Carr is a faux queen, musician, playwright, and San Francisco native, who performs regularly on the famous Trannyshack stage, in addition to countless other drag events at nightclubs, political benefits and fundraisers, festival events and street fairs. She fearlessly and flawlessly mixes comedy, performance art, dance and theater into musical montages, always with an eye for social relevance, glamour, and philosophy. Her first play, “Hold Me Closer, Tiny Dionysus” shocked and stimulated audiences at CounterPULSE in 2012. Besides having a D.I.Y. spirit and a healthy respect for the talents and uniqueness of others, Trixxie also champions reusing and recycling – many of her costumes are made from found materials or scraps.

Additional credits include Peaches Christ’s touring live pre-show for All About Evil; Taylor Mac’s “The Lily’s Revenge” at The Magic Theatre; “WorkMore!” and “The Unbearable Lightness of Raya” at CounterPULSE. Also in 2012 Trixxie went back to the UK where she performed and directed, Trixxie Carr’s “The Right to RULE!”, her own full-length drag-theatre spectacular that was commissioned as part of the UK’s 2012 Cultural Olympiad! Trixxie Carr loves waist cinchers, sequins, puppies, The Cure, and laughing (most of all)… Find out more at trixxiecarr.com.

KIM BURLY (Performer)

I have been passionately working as a bearded lady for the past seven years within San Francisco, as well as playing to audiences in Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Salt Lake City and Honolulu. I am always fascinated with pushing the boundaries of people’s pre-conceived ideas of what a “drag queen” should be. I am genuinely thrilled to be a part of The San Francisco Album Project, and can’t wait to excite, provoke, and most of all entertain!
